Google AI Overviews for Brand Searches Move to the Right Column: What Pakistani Businesses Must Fix Now

By Admin · 11/3/2026

Search your own business name on Google today, and don't be surprised if the page looks different from last week. For many brand searches on desktop, Google is now showing the AI Overview in the right-hand column, in the spot where the Knowledge Panel used to sit, instead of at the top or in the middle of the main results. Google hasn't confirmed whether this is a test or a permanent rollout, but this is the new reality of Google AI Overviews brand searches, and Pakistani businesses should check what Google is saying about them right now. This matters more than most layout tweaks. A brand search is not a casual browse. It's someone who already knows your name and is one step away from calling, visiting, or ordering. If Google answers that search with an AI-written summary, that paragraph becomes your first impression, whether you wrote it or not. And Google AI Overviews brand searches are now sitting exactly where that high-intent customer looks first. Google AI Overviews Brand Searches: What Changed in November 2026 SEO Chris Long posted examples on 2 November 2026 showing AI Overviews for brand terms appearing in the right column instead of a Knowledge Panel. SEO David McSweeney had spotted a similar change a couple of days earlier, on 31 October, noting some variations where the panel appears further down the page. Search Engine Roundtable covered both sightings here: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ai-overviews-brands-right-42440.html Google has not commented, so we don't know if every brand search will look like this, or if it's a limited test that could be rolled back. The sightings so far are mainly on desktop. Still, the direction is clear: the November 2026 Google webmaster roundup puts AI Overviews on more than 80 percent of searches: https://www.seroundtable.com/november-2026-google-webmaster-report-42431.html Why the Right Column Changes Everything for Brands The old Knowledge Panel was, for all its faults, mostly facts: hours, phone number, photos, reviews, a map pin. An AI Overview is different. It's a summary written in Google's words, drawn from whatever Google can find about you. That makes it far more powerful, and far easier to get wrong. Picture a printing shop in Jhelum, a boutique in Lahore, or a coaching centre in Karachi. A customer types the business name, ready to order. Instead of a neat panel of facts, they get a paragraph. If it lists an old phone number, the wrong opening day, or services you stopped offering two years ago, the customer may simply move on. They won't phone you to double-check. And when the summary sits in the panel slot, your website feels further away, because the customer got an answer without clicking. What to Check About Your Brand Today Open Google in a private browser window and search your exact business name, then your business name plus your city. Do it on desktop, where this change has been spotted, and screenshot what you see. Then ask five blunt questions: 1. Is the summary accurate? Check your services, city, hours, and contact details. 2. Does it describe what you sell now, not what you sold in 2023? 3. Do the links underneath point to your real website, or to a directory or competitor? 4. Does it mention reviews, and do they sound like your business? 5. Would a stranger reading only that paragraph trust you enough to contact you? If any answer is no, you have a content problem, not just a Google problem. Google can only summarise what it finds. Fix the sources, and the summary has a chance to improve. Fix the Sources Google Reads First Google builds these summaries from your website copy, your Google Business Profile fields, your reviews, and other indexed pages. Work through them in that order. First, your Google Business Profile. Make sure your name, category, address, phone number, hours, and website link match your website exactly. Upload recent photos too. Three blurry photos from 2022 don't inspire confidence, in a human or in a machine. Second, your website's own pages. Your homepage and About page should state, in plain first-paragraph language, what you do, where you're based, and who you serve. Vague copy gives Google room to invent. Third, your reviews. Reply to reviews, and ask happy customers to leave one. Never buy fake reviews. One penalty costs far more than a few empty stars ever earned. Fourth, consistency everywhere else. Directories, Facebook, and Instagram should carry the same name, address, and phone number. A Weekly Routine That Takes 20 Minutes Once a week, search your brand name on desktop and mobile, and note what the AI summary says. Compare it with last week's screenshot. Check your Google Business Profile for new reviews or suggested edits. Then fix one wrong fact at the source, on your own website or profile, instead of complaining about the summary itself. Also check beyond Google: customers ask ChatGPT and Gemini about local businesses too. Our earlier guide pairs well with this check: https://elitedigitalhub.click/blogs/ai-answer-engine-tracking-pakistan What Not to Do Don't try to opt out of AI Overviews for your brand. There's no switch for that, and blocking Googlebot would remove you from search entirely, which is far worse. Don't stuff your homepage with your business name twenty times, and don't rewrite your whole site every time Google tests a new layout. Tests come and go. Accurate, well-structured pages survive all of them. The Bigger Picture for Pakistani Businesses For years, ranking number one was the goal. Now, for brand searches, the AI answer may take over the panel itself. The businesses that win here are the ones whose facts are clear, consistent, and easy for both a customer and a machine to trust. That shift favours small, well-run Pakistani businesses. A shop in Jhelum with an accurate profile, fresh photos, real reviews, and a clear website can look just as credible in an AI summary as a big chain. Most competitors won't bother with the maintenance. That's your opening. They are AI-written summaries for a specific business or brand name. In the newly spotted layout, the summary appears in the right-hand column on desktop, where the Knowledge Panel used to sit. Has Google confirmed this right-column change? No. As of 2 November 2026, Google has not commented, and it's not yet clear whether it's a test or a full rollout. Does this affect mobile searches too? The recent sightings are mainly on desktop, so check both desktop and mobile for your own business name. Can I stop Google showing an AI Overview for my brand? No, there's no opt-out for a specific brand. Keep your website and Google Business Profile accurate and consistent instead. What should I fix first if my AI summary is wrong? Start with your Google Business Profile and homepage: make your name, city, services, hours, and phone number match exactly in both places.
